Not only are dogs considered a human’s best friend because of the unparalleled companionship they offer, but research shows they also boost human health.  Owning a dog can encourage you to be more physically active. A dog’s need for a daily walk (or walks) can dovetail nicely with a human’s need for exercise.  As we age, the importance of engaging in cardiovascular activity increases.

A Harvard Report titled Get Healthy, Get a Dog details the many ways that dogs and cats can have a positive effect on the lives of human beings.

The study indicates that pets:

  • help people to be calmer, more mindful and more present in their lives
  • the mere act of petting can reduce the pet owner’s blood pressure and heart rate

In scientific terms, Dr. Marwan Sabbagh, MD explains ‘Simply petting an animal can decrease the level of stress hormone cortisol and boost the release of the neurotransmitter serotonin, resulting in lowered blood pressure and heart rate, and possibly, in an elevated mood.”

And, it’s a two-way street as the dog or cat benefits from the relationship as well.  Exercise, petting and the attention of a master all have a positive effect on the animal.  (Yes, some people do walk their cats.)  Humans, like dogs, are social animals and walking the dog is a surefire way to meet other dog-loving people, leading to less social isolation.

Cats and dogs live in the present and don’t worry about tomorrow.  Their sense of worrying about the here and now tends to rub off on their owners and can be comforting to the elderly, who tend to worry about tomorrow.  For people who are unable to or not suited for taking daily walks with their pet, cats offer constant companionship right in their homes.

Naturally, adopting a dog or a cat is a commitment that can last for many years, you must be ready and willing to assume that responsibility.  Seniors need to consider a backup plan for the unexpected –  hospital stays, having to move to a long-term care facility, or passing away.  If the cost and responsibility of caring for a dog or cat are too daunting, there are other options, such as an aquarium with tropical fish to create a soothing environment. Know that if you make the choice to have a pet, you will be richly rewarded with one of the most satisfying, loving relationships you will ever experience.
